Do it scared! Moving past imposter syndrome.
Imposter syndrome is such a funny thing. I believe it stems from the lies our brain tells us to keep us "safe" from some imaginary harm. Helpful when we’re living in the jungle, not so helpful when we just want to succeed in our careers. Where your brain is an overzealous security guard, constantly on the lookout for non-existent dangers. But instead of fleeing from a ferocious tiger, we're braving the wilds of public speaking, seeking promotions, or in my case, casually mingling with top-tier celebrities on film sets worth more than a small island.
In the early days of working as a Makeup Artist for Film and TV, my imposter syndrome was like an untamed beast. I would get physically ill before every single day on a new set, because of a barrage of fears and anxieties. (Also, having a properly packed set bag went a long way in making me feel more prepared to handle whatever came my way. But we’ll talk more about that another day.) Yet, taking the metaphorical leap off the cliff did wonders to silence that nagging doubter in my head. "Do it scared" became my life-saving mantra. And little by little those anxieties calmed and I developed coping mechanisms to help along the way. It's all about showing up, even if your knees are shaking, and proving, to yourself, that you can and will face your fears and that even if you fall on your face, you will get back up, dust yourself off...evaluate the lesson learned, implement the lesson and stride forward.
Here's the kicker: I've kicked imposter syndrome to the curb. Yep, you heard me, it's gone. How, you ask? After over 15 years working with the faces of the rich and famous, from CEOs to silver screen stars, and even a U.S. President, it hit me—we're all just gloriously imperfect humans! And NO ONE, I mean no one has a clue what they're doing 100% of the time, so technically, we're all faking it till we make it. If everyone's an imposter, then no one is, right?
So, prioritize showing up for numero uno—you. Convince yourself that no tumble is too great, no blunder too grand, and you're practically there. The rest is a sprinkle of luck, which is really just being ready when chance comes knocking.
You've totally got this, whatever your "this" may be.
